Front Wheel Drive? Rear Wheel Drive? Why It Matters

As you’re shopping for a vehicle, you’ll notice that some are rear-wheel drive and some are front-wheel drive. At Grieco Mazda of Delray Beach, we want drivers to understand how this affects their driving experience.

Most passenger vehicles today are FWD. Because they don’t need a heavy drive shaft to carry the power to the rear axle, these vehicles can be lighter and more fuel efficient with more space in the cabin. Having the weight of the engine over the drive wheels also helps with traction.

Many trucks and some luxury cars are RWD. Luxury cars get a smoother ride from RWD, and they can accelerate and brake more smoothly. For trucks, RWD is the more rugged, lower-maintenance option. It also gives a better weight balance from the front to the rear, and it helps maintain traction if you’re carrying cargo or towing.
